Midcounties Co-operative names Mark Wilson as general manager for food business
The Midcounties Co-operative has named former Waitrose director Mark Wilson as the group general manager for its food retail business.
Having worked for Waitrose for 23 years, most recently as director, retail operations for the north, Wilson will be responsible for Midcounties’ 240 supermarkets and convenience stores in his new role.
Commenting on his appointment, Wilson said: “It was fantastic working for Waitrose but the opportunity presented by Midcounties was irresistible.”
Ben Reid, chief executive of The Midcounties Co-operative, said: “Mark has joined us at a very exciting time when, despite a highly competitive and challenging market, our Food Business is growing and returning impressive results.
"There are two key reasons why he is a good fit for the business; he brings not only a great wealth of experience but he has an innovative approach to food retailing, which I’m sure will come to the fore as we develop the business even further.
“The two businesses operate in a like-minded way – both have strong values and principles and we work for the thousands of people who co-own the business, in our case our members and with Waitrose their partners.
“These similarities mean Mark can make a smooth transition into our business and will be able to make an immediate impact.”
Wilson will take over responsibility for the food business from deputy chief executive Andy Cresswell who will continue in his role, concentrating on developing the wider business.
