UK Grocery Shoppers Checkout from Paper Receipts: 71% Choose Digital When Offered In-Store

Leading digital receipt solution, Yocuda, has found that Grocery consumers’ appetite for digital receipts is accelerating, as new research reveals 71% of UK grocery shoppers opt for a digital receipt when it’s offered in-store.

This figure rises to 81% among customers who shop in grocery stores every day.

Digital-first loyalty customers:

New data from Yocuda also revealed that Grocery loyalty card members are ready to ditch the paper, with 79% stating they’d like to receive a digital receipt every time they use their loyalty card in store and 63% expecting retailers to personalise offers based on their shopping history. This signals a growing demand for seamless, personalised post-purchase experiences within the Grocery sector.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

A paperless receipt future:

When asked about the future of receipts, grocery consumers overwhelmingly agree that digital is best, with 85% believing we will have fewer or no paper receipts in five years, rising to 93% among those who grocery shop daily. This shift in mindset signals a growing consumer demand for eco-conscious alternatives that also deliver on convenience.

Commenting on the research, Edward Drax, MD of Yocuda, states;

“These insights confirm what we at Yocuda have long understood: UK consumers are ready to move beyond paper receipts, not just for convenience, but because they expect more sustainable and personalised solutions. We are witnessing Grocery become one of the fastest-growing sectors for digital receipt adoption, whether integrated into loyalty apps or offered at checkout. The conversation is no longer about whether digital receipts will become the norm within grocery stores, but when.”

The many benefits of digital receipts:

Some of the top benefits of digital receipts listed by UK grocery shoppers include being less likely to lose it (60%), being better for the environment (59%) and being easier to store than paper receipts (50%).

Edward Drax comments on the many opportunities digital receipts also bring for retailers.

“For brands, this isn’t just a sustainability issue – it’s a customer experience opportunity. Digital receipts open the door to in-store customer identification, personalised post-purchase engagement, loyalty integration, and reduced friction at checkout, all while helping reduce waste and carbon emissions. We’re proud to be supporting leading retailers on their journey towards this receipt transformation and a more sustainable future in retail.”
