Ocado cost saving drive puts 1,000 jobs at risk
Ocado Group is reported to be considering cutting up to 1,000 jobs, roughly 5% of its workforce, as it looks to reduce costs after a difficult year at its automated warehouse business.
According to The Sunday Times, an announcement about redundancies could happen as early as this month, although discussions are at an early stage.
Subscribe to TRBCiting an unnamed source, the newspaper said the job cuts are expected to be at Ocado Group’s head office and could include roles in areas like technology, legal, finance and HR.
When asked to comment on the report by Reuters, an Ocado spokesperson said the company regularly reviews is operations.
They added: “If and when decisions are made that affect our people, we are committed to communicating with them directly and ensuring they are supported throughout.”
Last month, Ocado Group announced that its Canadian partner Sobeys is to close its customer fulfilment centre in Calgary following an assessment of ecommerce demand in its key markets.
In December, the group said it was preparing to offer its robotic warehouse technology to more customers following the end of mutual exclusivity arrangements with retailers in most markets where the technology is currently live.
