GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

Record week for TV’s as Christmas goes digital at John Lewis.

Sales figures released yesterday (for week ending 28th November) by John Lewis show significant increases in electrical and home technology, with a record week for television sales.

The department store achieved a sterling total of £91.79 million last week, which is the earliest the retailer has ever surpassed the £90m milestone in the run up to Christmas. The figure is 22% up on the same week last year and 6.5% up on the equivalent week in 2007.

Televisions had a record week outside Clearance as customers prepare for Christmas entertainment, with the Samsung 32″ at £349 a firm favourite. As well as watching festive films, family gaming is likely to be popular with Wii and PS3 sales exceeding the biggest week of Christmas 2008 by 50%.

Nat Wakely, Director of Selling Operations for John Lewis, said: “This week has been incredibly strong. Customers are gift buying as well as getting the home ready for Christmas, including purchasing a new television to watch festive entertainment and play games with all the family. We are also seeing customers making a day of their Christmas shopping with our in-store restaurants showing strong trade. As temperatures begin to drop, cold weather purchases are also on the increase.”

Figures also show that johnlewis.com had a record week, exceeding its previous biggest week by more than a million pounds, well in advance of ‘cyber Monday’.
