Poundland updates on store closure programme

Poundland has given an update on its 68 store closure programme, saying that 11 have now been put on hold until their leases expire.

As part of the restructuring programme, closure dates have been confirmed for 57 stores, with the final six scheduled to close on 28 September.

The retailer’s Irvine Rivergate Centre branch, originally set to close on 14 September, has reopened following a restock. Planned October closures in Brighton (London Road) and Anniesland (Great Western Road) have also been paused.

In addition, a proposed closure in Whitby due to a lease expiry has been reversed after Poundland reached an interim agreement with the store’s landlord.

The retailer is aiming to operate between 650 and 700 stores, down from around 800 at the start of its restructuring. The streamlining follows the company’s acquisition by Gordon Brothers in June.

Poundland managing director Barry Williams said: “We’re determined to deliver a simpler, more focused Poundland that keeps its promise of amazing value to customers.

“We appreciate the support we’ve had from suppliers, landlords and other partners who’ve now all been fully briefed on our plans to get us back on track.

“While there is much work to do, I’m confident that a Poundland focused on the simple value our customers expect, has a bright future.”

Poundland has also announced that it has completed a simplification of its digital presence with the conversion of Poundland.co.uk from a transactional to a brand website. It has also completed the roll-out of simple £1, £2 and £3 pricing to a range of categories, with more to move over to the new offer by the end of the month.
