Poundland to close a further round of stores

Poundland is preparing to close a further round of stores as part of its restructuring programme.

Some 14 shops will be shuttered before early February in addition to the 19 sites that are set to close over the next few months.

All shops are understood to have launched clearance sales with discounts of up to 40%.

The company currently expects the chain to have reduced from 800 stores at the beginning of the programme to between 650 and 700 at the end of the process.

The news of the latest closures means that Poundland will have lost 100 stores by the early part of the year.

After being sold to Gordon Brothers for £1 last June, the company avoided going into administration in August after a restructuring plan was approved by the High Court.

Poundland has been rolling out a new simplified grocery pricing as looks to get the business back on track. This includes three price points of £1, £2, £3 being introduced to remove what the retailer described as additional price complexity.

The latest sites identified for closure include:

  • Lancaster
  • Weston-super-Mare
  • Faversham
  • Northampton Sixfields
  • Hammersmith
  • Liverpool
  • Yeovil
  • Prestatyn
  • Nottingham Eastpoint
  • Lymington
  • Christchurch High Street
  • Bristol Avon Meads
  • Coatbridge
  • Winton
