Tesco extends Clubcard loyalty scheme to 16 and 17-year-olds as it courts younger shoppers
Tesco has launched a new version of its Tesco Clubcard for 16 and 17-year-olds to give younger customers the chance to access to Clubcard Prices deals for the first time.
Teenagers in the age group can only join the scheme after being invited from the Clubcard account of a parent or guardian. Once signed up, they will be able to access Clubcard Prices in Tesco stores and collect Clubcard points that can be converted into vouchers for money off at the checkout.
Subscribe to TRBThe new offering is only available through the Tesco app or website and no plastic card is provided. The supermarket said the ‘Invite to Clubcard’ button will only be visible to members using the latest version of the app, so anyone not seeing it will need to update.
Shama Wilson, Tesco Group membership and loyalty director, said: “We are delighted to be giving younger customers access to Tesco Clubcard for the first time, and we have no doubt that it will prove popular with 16 and 17-year-olds, whether they are shopping in one of our ‘big Tesco’ or ‘little Tesco’ stores.
“From today our new Clubcard for 16-17s members will not only be able to get Clubcard Prices in-store, including our iconic Tesco lunchtime meal deal for just £3.85, but also collect points that they can turn into vouchers for money off their in-store shopping.”
Last week, Tesco reported that it had posted a 1.8% increase in UK like-for-like sales in its first quarter. However, growth was slower than in the previous quarter when like-for-likes increased by 3.1%.
The supermarket has revealed Clubcard is used in more than 80% of its sales, with 24 million UK households now signed up to the scheme.
