Morrisons to axe 100 Morrisons Daily convenience stores
Morrisons is to close 100 Morrisons Daily convenience stores in a move that could put hundreds of jobs at risk.
The sites due for closure are all former McColl’s stores which the supermarket acquired in 2022. They are expected to shut in the next few months, although Morrisons will look to move affected staff to other locations, including supermarkets and manufacturing, “where possible”.
Subscribe to TRBMorrisons said the stores have been struggling for years and are loss making, despite attempts to turn them around.
A consultation with affected staff is understood to have already begun. The supermarket said it was a tough but necessary decision.
It added: “This situation has been exacerbated in more recent years by significant cost increases resulting from government policy choices, which have made returning these stores to profitability even more difficult.
“The combination of the proposed closure of loss-making stores and the continued addition of attractive new franchise openings will strengthen our overall convenience network.
“We continue to see the opportunity to open hundreds more franchise convenience stores in the years ahead.”
Morrisons operates more than 1,700 convenience stores, including the 120 new franchise stores that opened last year.
