A Morrisons spokesperson told the Press Association: “We can confirm that an colleague at our Sittingbourne distribution centre visited Club Chemistry and subsequently contracted meningitis.

“He is currently receiving treatment and we are in close touch with his family.

“We are following all government guidance, the site is operating as normal, and we are continuing to monitor the situation closely.”

The UK is currently dealing with an outbreak of the infection among young people in Kent, with the likely epicentre being Club Chemistry. Most of those affected are students at the University of Kent.

As of 5pm on 18 March, 15 cases had been confirmed and a further 12 were under investigation. Two students have died as a result of the outbreak.
