Jacobs Douwe Egberts aims for Chinese expansion through Tmall

Jacobs Douwe Egberts is to sell its coffee and tea in China through a new flagship store on Alibaba’s Tmall Global.

The online shop will initially sell the Dutch company’s Moccona, L’OR, Kenco and Maxwell House brands, although more brands will be introduced in the coming months.

According to the intergovernmental International Coffee Organization, coffee consumption in China has increased by an average of 16% each year over the past decade. This compares to an uplift 2% in the rest of the world.

David Lloyd, Alibaba’s general manager  for the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Nordics, said: “We believe that the range of JDE’s high-quality coffee products and their iconic brands will become very popular amongst Chinese consumers.”

Alibaba opened an office in the Netherlands in 2016 to help Dutch companies enter the Chinese market. Other Dutch brands to make use of the platform include the likes of G-Star Raw, Heineken and Philips,
