Aldi rolls out Colleague Shops to reduce food waste

Aldi is rolling out Colleague Shops across the UK to give warehouse operations and office staff the chance to buy food products that can no longer be sold in stores.

The move follows a successful trial at Aldi’s Darlington regional distribution centre.

Part of the retailer’s work to reduce food waste, the scheme covers products that are still perfectly good to consume.

With the shops now being rolled out in Aldi’s 11 regional distribution centres, the retailer said they are expected to prevent an estimated 240 tonnes of food going to waste each year.

Luke Emery, national sustainability director at Aldi UK, said: “The Colleague Shop is another example of how we’re working to cut food waste across our operations.

“It’s a practical initiative that benefits both colleagues and the environment, and we’re pleased to extend it nationwide following a successful pilot.”

In 2022, Aldi reduced food waste within its operations by 57% compared to 2017, which meant it reached its 2030 target eight years ahead of schedule. The retailer has now aiming to reduce food waste by 90% by 2030 against a 2017 baseline.
