Matalan is a British fashion and homeware retail brand based in Knowsley, Merseyside.
It started in 1985 when John Hargreaves opened the first Matalan store at Bamber Bridge, near Preston. It was named after his two sons, Matt and Alan. The company grew quickly and a decade later there were 50 Matalan stores nationwide.
The retailer said its mission is "to provide outstanding quality and value for modern families". It also aims to make shopping as easy as possible for consumers through well situated locations, late night opening, convenient parking, ‘everything under one roof’ and free click and collect services. Matalan stores often larger those of similar retailers, with space averaging around 30,000 square feet.
