John Lewis sales up 4.5% last week after strong Christmas Eve trading

The John Lewis department store chain increased its sales by 4.5% year-on-year last week after it saw “very strong” sales on Christmas Eve and made a good start to its clearance sale both in its shops and online.

Fashion sales climbed by 10.7% on last year as sales in the department were boosted by a 10% rise in the women’s cashmere category and a 21.5% uplift in the women’s accessories category.

Electrical and home technology sales were up 3.1% in the week as customers took advantage of clearance sale offers. The retailer said Apple products performed particularly well as did communication technology items.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 2.3% on last year although the gift cook and dine category achieved a sales increase of 25%. The gift food category also performed well with sales rising by 103%.
