Eight more TJ Hughes stores to close next week
The administrators of discount department store chain TJ Hughes have announced that a further eight stores will close next week bringing the total number of store closures to 30.
The Preston, Middlesbrough and Southend stores will close on 16 August, the Bristol, King’s Lynn and Newport stores 17 August and the Ipswich and Maidstone stores on 18 August.
The administrators Ernst & Young also announced the immediate closure of the Salford store that was looted and badly damaged on Tuesday evening. The 23 staff who work at the store will be made redundant today.
Around 1,600 jobs have now been lost since the company entered administration on 30 June.
John Gorle, the national officer for the Usdaw union said: “This announcement is bitterly disappointing and despite the fact that the threat of closure has been hanging over their heads for the past month, staff will be absolutely devastated to finally hear that their store is going to close.”
Usdaw said it would continue to do everything it could to help its members affected by the closures to secure all monies and severance payments they were entitled to and would also provide advice and support to help them find another job.
