JYSK to open up to 100 stores in major European cities

JYSK is to open up to 100 new stores in central locations across European capitals and other large cities over the next three years.

Before the end of its financial year in August, the Danish furniture and homeware retailer plans to launch up to 30 new sites, which will be slightly smaller in format. The remaining 70 will open over the next two years.

In April, JYSK opened new stores in central Dublin and Amsterdam and is planning further openings in the cities. Later this year, new stores will also launch in Stockholm, Oslo, Madrid and Barcelona.

Rami Jensen, president and chief executive of JYSK, said: “With more than 3,600 stores primarily across Europe, JYSK is already widely established and known for our great offers in many places. But there is still room for more JYSK stores when we look at the map of Europe, and we want to get even closer to the many customers who live in European capitals and other key cities.”

Since opening its first store on the outskirts of Aarhus in 1979, JYSK has been steadily expanding with sites located in small and medium-sized towns, or on the edge of larger cities.

As part of the company’s new three-year strategy, it is now looking to expand within markets where it already has a presence. Stores will have around 800 square metres of sales floor compared to the average JYSK store size of around 950 square metres.

Jenson said: “In a country like Denmark, where our founder Lars Larsen opened his first JYSK store 47 years ago, we are well established and widely recognised by customers. And in many other countries across Europe, we still see significant potential. That is why we are putting more effort into opening new stores in countries where we are already present and have local knowledge of the market.”

With more than 3,600 stores and online shops in 50 countries, JYSK currently has around 25 UK stores in the north and midlands.
