Currys chief executive Alex Baldock to exit the business

Currys has announced that Alex Baldock is to step down as group chief executive after eight years to take a new external position.

The electrical and tech retailer said it will commence a formal recruitment process for his successor, considering both internal and external candidates. Baldock will remain with the business during that time to ensure an orderly transition.

Baldock joined Currys in 2018 after working for six years as group chief executive of Shop Direct.

Ian Dyson, group chair of Currys, said: “On behalf of the board, I want to thank Alex for his exceptional contribution to Currys.

“During his eight years here, he has achieved a huge amount, transforming the business in the face of some difficult headwinds.

“Currys is very well positioned for future success with a strategy that is clearly working, great financial health and a very strong leadership team. On behalf of everyone at Currys, I wish Alex all the best in his future endeavours.”

Baldock said: “My eight years at Currys have been simply the best of my career, and I’ll always be a loyal Currys customer, advocate and shareholder.

“Currys’ next chapter can be its most exciting yet. But it’s time for someone else to steer the business there, and time for me to move on to a new opportunity.”

The company has also provided an update on current trading, saying its performance has been in line with expectations since its peak trading update on 21 January. The group continues to expect full-year adjusted pre-tax profit to be up 11% to 17%, at £180 million to £190 million.
