Carphone Warehouse boosted by Christmas expectations

Strong sales forecast for mobile retailer
December 3 2003
Carphone Warehouse saw its share price jump on Tuesday as the markets reacted to strong sales expectations for the retailer.

The company confirmed that it has seen very high sales of picture phones in recent weeks, along with a fourfold increase in sales of hands-free kits. A new UK came into force this week, making it illegal for drivers to use hand-held mobiles.
As mobile users trade up to new phones with colour screens, picture messaging and other next-generation features, the main limit on UK sales his year is likely to be the availability of handsets.
Carphone Warehouse chief executive Charles Dunstone told the Guardian newspaper: “I think the market is taking the view that Christmas is probably going very well for mobile phone retailers, especially with all the competition going on between the operators.
“All you have to do is come down to one of our stores and see the number of people in there now.”
Carphone Warehouse shares closed up 3.5p higher at 139p, the highest for more than two years.
