Waitrose to top up Healthy Start Vouchers for new families

Waitrose has committed to topping up the value of the Government’s Healthy Start Vouchers by an additional £1.50.

The vouchers are issued to pregnant women and low income families with children under the age of four and can be spent on healthy foods, including fresh, frozen, and tinned fruit and vegetables. Vouchers presented at a Waitrose checkout will now be increased in value from £3.10 to £4.60.

James Bailey, executive director for Waitrose, said: “We’re committed to helping people across the country access nutritious food. We hope this latest move will help boost the fruit and veg intake for expectant mothers and thousands of young children at a vital stage of their development. We know Healthy Start Vouchers provide essential support to people so we wanted to help make them go even further.”

Waitrose and John Lewis have also been offering practical support to families with staff giving nutrition and nursery advice to Home-Start community groups. In addition, Waitrose donates surplus stock directly to families in need through Fareshare.
