Southern Co-op launches free shopping giveaway across 173 stores
Southern Co-op has launched a four-week giveaway where up to 10,000 customers will have their shopping paid for, as it looks to support communities through periods of financial pressure.
Running until 21 August in all 173 stores, the initiative will see winners selected at random via the till system at both main checkouts and self-service, with no manual intervention required from staff.

The summer giveaway follows a similar initiative at Christmas where the retailer gave away hundreds of free festive shops and provided £75,000 in grants for local causes through its Winter Fund.
Anuj Christie, head of store operations at Southern Co-op, said: “As a co-operative, we’re always looking for ways to give back to the communities we serve, and the summer holidays can be a particularly challenging time for families managing the costs of keeping children fed and entertained.
“This initiative is about creating genuine moments of surprise and delight for our customers, while also supporting the wider retail sector through our partnership with the Retail Trust. For every free shop we give away, we’re contributing to vital support for retail workers who may be facing challenges of their own.
“Our colleagues will play a central role in bringing this to life on the shop floor, and it’s a great example of what being a co-operative is really about – people supporting people.”
