Sainsbury’s announces leadership changes
Sainsbury’s has made changes within its operating board as it looks to strengthen its leadership to support the delivery of its Next Level strategy.
This has included the appointment of Tracey Clements to the newly created role of chief retail, logistics and supply chain officer.
Due to join the supermarket on 3 September, she has spent the last three years working with BP, most recently as senior vice president of mobility and convenience Europe.
Prior to this, Clements was chief operating officer at Boots UK & Ireland where she led the operation of the business through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Subscribe to TRBEarlier in her career, she worked for 17 years with Tesco where she held a significant number of leadership roles, including managing director of Tesco Express and chief executive of One Stop.
Simon Roberts, chief executive of Sainsbury’s, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Tracey to our operating board. Her breadth of experience, energy and customer-first mindset make her an outstanding addition to our leadership team and I’m confident she will play a pivotal role in accelerating our plan and shaping the next chapter of our Sainsbury’s business.”
In a further move, Sainsbury’s has given operating board accountability for technology to Mark Given, who will become chief technology, marketing and data officer from 1 September. The supermarket said the change reflects the strategic importance of technology and AI in delivering an outstanding customer experience. In his new position, Given will oversee technology, data and insights alongside marketing and Nectar 360.
Sainsbury’s has also announced that Rob Barnes will join the business in early October as chief technology officer, reporting to Given. He has been working as chief information officer at Asda since January 2024 and has previously served in chief technology officer roles for delivery and food and retail at M&S.
Meanwhile, Rhian Bartlett will become chief commercial and sustainability officer in an expanded role and the Argos retail stores and transformation teams will move to Graham Biggart in his role as managing director for Argos and chief strategy officer.
Roberts said: “Alongside Tracey, we’re strengthening our leadership across technology, commercial and sustainability, all areas that are critical to delivering our Next Level strategy.
“With Rhian taking forward our combined commercial and sustainability ambition, Mark uniting technology, marketing and data, Graham leading our group strategy and the transformation of Argos, and Rob joining us as CTO, we’re building the momentum and the capabilities to move faster, serve customers better and unlock long-term growth across the group.”
The operating board reshuffle follows news that the supermarket’s chief retail and technology officer Clodagh Moriarty will be joining Dunelm as chief executive on 1 October.
Roberts said: “I’d also like to again express my heartfelt thanks to Clo for her very significant contribution to our business and our team. Clo has brought energy, commitment and impact, and we all wish her every success for the future when she leaves us in September.”
