Iceland rolls out Lucky Dip food discounting scheme nationwide

Iceland Foods is rolling out Olio’s Lucky Dip scheme in 950 Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores across the UK.

The move means that Iceland is the first retailer to partner with Olio on an end-to-end food waste solution that covers both discounting and redistribution.

Initially trialled in London and Manchester, the scheme’s £2 Lucky Dip bag offers at least eight items such as baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled meats or deli products.

Lucky Dip bags are listed on the Olio app where users reserve them before picking them up in stores during a set collection window. Any unsold or unclaimed bags are then collected by Olio volunteers and shared locally to ensure that nothing goes to waste.

Stuart Lendrum, director of product, process and sustainability at Iceland Foods said: “Our Lucky Dip bags have already proven a great way for families to save money without compromising on quality.

“By taking the scheme with Olio nationwide, we’re making sure every Iceland shopper can unlock fantastic value for just £2 a bag.

“This national rollout marks a huge step forward in our mission to cut food waste and help people save money, making Iceland the first retailer to offer a truly end-to-end solution from discounting to redistribution.”

Saasha Celestial-One, chief operating officer and co-founder of Olio said: “We’re so excited to announce this latest layer of our partnership with Iceland Foods, and we’re looking forward to rolling out Lucky Dip nationally across its stores.

“It’s fantastic to see Iceland adopting innovative new approaches to selling more discounted food – and showing such commitment to fighting food waste across their stores at the same time.”

The rollout builds on Iceland’s recent partnership with Olio and Gander to launch a Reductions Feed which gives nearby Olio users a live view of yellow-sticker discounts available in stores.

The retailer also works with Olio to redistribute any unsold surplus food to the local community when shops close.
