BJSS launches report on New York stores innovating retail technology

BJSS has launched Top Stores That Are Innovating Retail Technology In 2023, a report exploring how New York’s most notable concept stores are redefining the bricks-and-mortar customer experience.

Based on in-person visits by BJSS retail consultants to 20 physical stores in New York City, this report details real-life examples of how to reshape the in-store customer experience to entice, engage and delight customers in today’s challenging landscape.

In the report, which is available now to download for free, BJSS’ experts evaluated each store on three criteria crucial to compete in a modern retail environment:

  • Experience – The ability to convert product, place and people into an engaging environment eliciting emotional reaction of joy, awe, delight or fun. Ultimately, the means by which a retail store sticks in your memories for the right reasons, and how it weaves a story about the brand ethos, and why its products or services will improve your life.
  • Technology – The use of digital touchpoints ahead of, during, or after the physical store visit, to engage, nurture or augment the shopping experience, adding value by reducing friction, bringing products to life, or simply entertaining and engaging shoppers.
  • Services – Often the core differentiator that causes shoppers to visit a store over shopping online; service is the added value that goes beyond mere product, whether that is the means of delivery, advice and support, personalisation, or extra-retail offerings and partnerships.

Ralph Robinson, Head of Retail & Consumer Markets, BJSS, said: “As advancements in immersive mobile and online technologies drive demand to pure digital shopping channels, the role of the physical store is changing in order for brands to remain competitive. What is most apparent from our evaluation of twenty of 2023’s most innovative New York stores across experience, technology and services, is that retailers are using the physical store experience, above all else, to differentiate over non-physical channels. Whilst touring we were evaluating stores both as retail consultants, but ultimately also as consumers ourselves, seeking out the means in which retailers are enticing shoppers into their spaces, and how they are engaging them once inside.”
