John Lewis sales up 3.9% last week

Sales at John Lewis rose by 3.9% year-on-year last week as trade was boosted by price matching a competitor's event on fashion and cooking and dining products.

Fashion sales climbed by 7.9% with menswear and womenswear sales rising by 9.5% and 5.2% respectively. The retailer said sales of its collaborative women's fashion ranges such as Modern Rarity, Somerset by Alice Temperley and Bruce by Bruce Oldfield increased by 45.7% as customers bought occasion outfits for weddings and summer events.

Home sales edged up 1.3% driven by a strong performance in the living and dining category where sales grew by 10.6%.

Electrical and home technology sales rose by 2% as sales in the audio and connected home category climbed by 19.5%. Sony's PlayStation promotion, together with the retailer’s three year guarantee promotion on PlayStation 4 and the Xbox, helped sales of gaming products to an increase of 342%.
