John Lewis sales up 3.9% last week
The John Lewis department store chain has reported that sales rose by 3.9% year-on-year last week as final Black Friday promotions on Monday helped to drive sales.
There were fewer promotions outside of the Black Friday period compared to last year, which influenced fashion and home sales.
In the fashion category, sales were down 2.3% while home sales fell by 1.4%. However, furniture sales were up 7.7% as customers bought inflatable beds, sofa beds and pillows for Christmas guests.
The electrical and home technology category continued to benefit from Black Friday promotions which helped sales to rise by 14.9%. Some of the best performing items included audio and connected home products, with Sonos, Apple and Samsung among the bestselling brands. John Lewis said its newly opened Nespresso boutiques in Peter Jones and John Lewis Kingston got off to a good start with buoyant sales in both coffee machines and coffee capsules.
Mark Felix, online trade director at John Lewis, said: “This week, My John Lewis customer events and a Double Points promotion on Partnership Card, means there are plenty of reasons for customers to shop.”
