GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

Year-on-year sales growth for John Lewis last week

Beauty products and Lego perform well

In its  mid-week Christmas trading update the week ending Saturday 4 December 2010, the company
said that sales were up 1.3% on 2009 and up 15% on 2008.

Sales of indoor Christmas lighting, gift wrap, premium beauty products, the Christmas bear which is featured in the TV commercial and Lego all bolstered the figures.

Commenting on the first four days of this week’s trade so far (to end of Wednesday 8 December), David Barford, Director Selling Operations for John Lewis, said,”Despite the still fairly adverse weather conditions it is pleasing to see growth on last year with sales +8 per cent – particularly as we are up against a strong last year comparative. Yet again this week the strength of our multichannel offer is proving popular with customers enabling them to choose the best and most convenient option for them. Most of our branches are delivering growth on last year and johnlewis.com is currently 52 per cent ahead of last year. We have seen a more balanced performance this week across all three directorates – fashion, home and EHT – as customers are now able to make that shopping trip that last week’s weather made a lot harder. However, we are aware that adverse weather conditions are still affecting some parts of the country.”

Simon Russell, Head of Multi-Channel  and  Joanna Brazier, Multi Channel Programme Director, both at  John Lewis, will be speaking at the Retail Bulletin’s 2nd Multichannel Summit 2011, February 2nd. To find out more, click here.
