Selfridges launches Christmas and the City campaign in London, Manchester and Birmingham

Selfridges has launched its “Christmas and the City” campaign in its London, Manchester and Birmingham stores and on selfridges.com.

Inspired by the “rush, magic and emotion” of the world’s most festive cities, the concept takes shoppers from downtown to the West End, with fireworks, Christmas lights, carnival, cabaret and big yellow taxis all featuring.

The department store’s 12 Oxford Street windows include scenes from Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Lagos, New York City, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Milan, Paris, London and Vice City.

In addition to Santa, this year’s campaign features a new cast of Selfridges characters, including Bellhops and Showgirls. All are dressed in bespoke costumes by Selfridges’ long-term collaborator, artist and theatrical designer Max Allen, and act as city guides to the best entertainment in every store.

Selfridges chief executive André Maeder said: “Christmas and the City has been imagined by our teams to create special memories to share and to make everyone feel welcome. Selfridges has always moved with the energy of our cities, and this Christmas, at the heart of London, Manchester and Birmingham, we’re celebrating cities real and imagined from around the world. There’s no place like Selfridges at Christmas; it’s a truly unmissable experience.”

At the heart of the London store, a New York-inspired Downtown Café is now open, with a backdrop of illuminated skyscrapers, festive scenes in every window and a subway carriage to dine in.

The café offers afternoon tea, diner classics and signature cocktails, with a subway carriage to dine in. Dishes include the Lox Bagel, Pastrami Club Sandwich, NYC Cheesecake and Coke Float.

From 1 December, Santa and his elves will be in store, while the Showgirl headlines the Snow Show, a Broadway-style performance that ends in snowfall. It will run at the London, Birmingham and Manchester Exchange Square stores, and London customers can book brunch at the café for the best seats.

Other highlights will include a Ralph’s Coffee pop-up on Duke Street from 26 October, and a Home Alone-inspired Disney experience, with exclusive products, food and Disney activations.
