Royal Mail reveals hot spots for online Christmas shopping

Royal Mail has revealed the top ten areas where shoppers made the most online purchases during this year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Its figures show that central London topped the list for the most prolific shoppers and was followed by Kirkwall, Lerwick and Llandrindod Wells. Other shopping hot spots in the top ten included Inverness, Dumfries, Carlisle, north west London, Shrewsbury and Galashiels.

Research from Royal Mail shows that almost half of Christmas shoppers do most or all of their Christmas shopping online and that online festive shopping spend is up 11% year-on-year.

In December 2018, Royal Mail handled 10% more parcels than last year at 164 million.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “We have looked at parcel delivery data across our network of delivery offices and this has revealed that Central London is the UK’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday online shopping hot spot for 2019. The data shows that parcel delivery at Christmas is just as important for our rural customers as it is for our city customers. We take the planning for the festive period very seriously and start preparing for the next year the moment the current one is over.”
