HMV to open three new stores in UK and Europe

HMV is to open three new stores in the UK and Europe as part of its continued expansion.

The new shops will be situated in Peterborough, Cork and The Hague.

HMV has been investing in its 100 existing UK stores by refitting them with its new ‘HMV Shop’ concept. However, due to strong and consistent demand for a new location in Peterborough, the retailer has secured a unit in the Queensgate Shopping Centre. The new store is set to open before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, HMV is preparing to open its third store in the Republic of Ireland, following the successful launches in Dublin and Limerick. The new location, situated in Cork’s Merchants Quay Shopping Centre, marks another step in the retailer’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the Irish market.

The retailer will also open a first store in The Netherlands with a new site in The Hague. This will give HMV a high street presence in its third EU market following its entry into Ireland and the opening of two stores in Belgium in Antwerp and Brussels.

The stores will be designed as hubs for music, film and pop culture enthusiasts and will offer an extensive range of vinyl, CDs, film and TV content on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K. They will also stock popular culture merchandise, books, turntables and headphones.

Phil Halliday, managing director at HMV and Fopp, said: “We’re constantly striving to create new homes for communities of fans to come together and share their love of music and popular culture. That’s why we are so thrilled that, after five years of working on a deal, we are finally able to open a new store in Peterborough and meet the strong public demand.

“We are also set to open our first store in The Netherlands and a third store in Ireland before the end of the year, in The Hague and Cork respectively. We plan to continue focusing on opening stores in Ireland and across mainland Europe as our main targets for expansion, where it currently makes more sense to do so from a business point of view.”

He added: “We always aim to bring ranges that can’t be found anywhere else under one roof. We’re confident that we can continue to bring something new to shoppers across the UK and Europe and hope that fans will share our excitement when we open the doors of our three new stores.”
