Discount Tuesday boosts Wyevale

Garden centre retailer takes on DIY market
July 7 2003
Discount days for customers over 60 are helping Wyevale Garden Centres challenge increasing competition from other UK retail sectors.

The UK leading garden centre operator said is had introduced 10 per cent Discount Tuesdays for the over 60s in March, as well as a marketing campaign including a number of 10 per cent discount weekends. The moves, aimed at combating increasing competition and discounting from the DIY and supermarket operators, had proved successful in maintaining market share.
In the 26 weeks to June 29, Wyvale group sales increased by 8.6 per cent, with like-for-like sales up by 2 per cent.
The extra discounts offered did not impact on gross margin, said Wyvale.
