Sandwich retailer Subway has chosen Bristol for the opening of its 2,500th store as part of plans to grow its number of UK and Irish shops to 3,000 by 2020. The new stores will create around 5,000 jobs.

The company has also highlighted its contribution to the economy after an independent report it commissioned from the Centre for Economic and Business Research found that the brand’s contribution to business creation in the UK and Ireland has increased to represent 1.1% of total of new businesses in the food and beverage activities industry.

The report shows that the most recent total turnover of Subway stores to be approximately £515 million with a GVA of approximately £248 million.

Subway currently operates 2,499 UK and Ireland stores which are all owned and operated by small business owners as franchisees.

Peter Dowding, Subway country director for UK and Ireland, said: “Our fantastic growth is a testament to the hard work and effort of our franchisees. With 5,000 new jobs expected over the next three years, opening up a further 500 stores demonstrates not only the value of the business to our franchisees but also collectively, the real and significant contribution to British and Irish economies.”
