Sainsbury’s promotes Clodagh Moriarty to group chief digital officer role

Sainsbury’s has promoted Clodagh Moriarty to the newly created role of group chief digital officer.

As part of the company’s operating board, Moriarty will be responsible for creating and leading its digital strategy across the Sainsbury’s supermarket, Argos, Sainsbury’s Bank and Nectar.

Having worked with Sainsbury’s for the last eight years, Moriarty was previously director of online where she ran the company’s online grocery business. Sainsbury’s said she has been instrumental in growing online sales and profitability and driving customer innovation, including introducing initiatives such as same-day grocery delivery, one-hour grocery delivery with Chop Chop, and SmartShop which lets customers scan products themselves as they shop in-store.

Sainsbury’s group chief executive, Mike Coupe, said: “The creation of the new group chief digital officer role demonstrates the importance we place in giving customers outstanding and seamless digital shopping experiences. Investment in this area is vital to our future success and I am confident that Clodagh has the expertise and leadership we need in this area.”

Prior to joining Sainsbury’s, Moriarty worked with management consultancy Bain & Co where she handled projects across multiple sectors and countries. Following two years as head of strategy at Sainsbury’s, she became category manager for meal solutions and then head of online trading before being promoted to director of online in 2016.
