Sainsbury’s and Tesco support communities affected by the Morocco earthquake and Libya floods

The Sainsbury’s and Tesco supermarkets have announced initiatives to support communities affected by the earthquake in Morocco and flooding in Libya.

Sainsbury’s is donating £250,000 to Oxfam’s emergency response to the Moroccan earthquake and a £250,000 to the British Red Cross, which is supporting communities both in Morocco and Libya.

Simon Roberts, chief executive at Sainsbury’s, said: “Our thoughts go out to all of the families and communities affected by the terrible events in Morocco and Libya. We are donating a total of £500,000 split between Oxfam and the British Red Cross to support with providing emergency assistance on the ground.

“Both organisations are playing a vital role in caring for those affected and we hope that our donation will support their efforts to make a difference at this difficult and devastating time.”

Meanwhile, Tesco has made a £250,000 donation to the Disaster Fund of the British Red Cross. In addition, Tesco customers across the UK will be able to offer their support through donations via text or online, or by using their vouchers on their Clubcard app.

Ken Murphy, group chief executive at Tesco, said: “We were deeply shocked and saddened to see the pictures and stories from Morocco since this disaster occurred on Friday night and now the tragic extent of the situation in Libya..

“I know many Tesco colleagues are already looking to provide support and assistance, and we are pleased to be able to work with the British Red Cross to give financial support that directly helps local teams on the ground.”
