Reflections: Retail, celebrations, high-heels and reuniting with the team

Remember when we all got a bit fed up of talking about ‘the new normal’?

It feels like a lifetime ago!

As I sit here in my home office and reflect on everything that’s happened since, it’s quite something to think about – it’s been a rollercoaster. And being in retail – we all really felt it. Not only did so many of us or our teams work on the frontline – there were so many other dramatic changes too…

Embracing Change in the Retail Landscape

Consumer behaviour underwent a seismic shift, leading to a channel switch to online shopping. E-commerce, digitization, contactless payments, and the rise of social commerce reshaped the retail world. Amidst all this change, we also grappled with challenges like supply chain disruptions, the effects of Brexit, and the ongoing battle to recruit and retain staff. Sadly, we witnessed the loss of both people and businesses. Perhaps “rollercoaster” isn’t quite the correct term here. I’ll let you insert the blanks. For many, it’s been a rough ride.

A Glimpse of Recovery

Yet, we’re seeing glimmers of hope. Not just in economic recovery, but in our collective attitude. We’ve embraced a new way of life, one that values family time, personal pursuits, and a healthier work-life balance. The spotlight is on ESG – environmental, social, and governance practices – paving the way for net-zero goals, employee well-being, and equal opportunities. Perhaps this signals a positive “new normal” – a step forward toward growth and betterment.

Celebrating Together: A Constant Need

Through it all, one constant remains: the need to celebrate together as a team. With our people. Our tribe. Amidst the changes, digital screens, and remote interactions, celebrating serves as a beacon of belonging and achievement that no technology can replicate.

The Unwavering Importance of Celebrating Together

Why is celebrating together still important to us? Here are five compelling reasons:

  1. Igniting Morale and Engagement: In a sea of emails and virtual meetings, celebrations inject vibrant energy into our work lives. Recognizing projects well-executed and personal milestones achieved amplifies motivation and reaffirms the significance of our hard work.
  2. Building Bonds in a Digital Era: Virtual meetings have their purpose, but they can’t replicate the magic of face-to-face interactions. Celebrations create a space for teams to forge connections beyond work tasks, sharing laughter and camaraderie.
  3. Saluting Resilience and Adaptability: The last 3 years weren’t a mere hiccup; it was a rollercoaster ride that tested our adaptability. Celebrating victories, regardless of their size, acknowledges the strength and resilience we’ve shown, breathing life into our accomplishments.
  4. Fueling Well-being: Remote work blurred the lines between professional and personal life, often leaving us feeling constantly connected. Celebrations offer a chance to detach, unwind, and recharge, nurturing a healthier work-life equilibrium.
  5. Showcasing Solidarity: Amidst unprecedented times, one truth emerged – we’re in this together. Celebrations symbolise our unity, cultivating a sense of camaraderie that transcends physical barriers.

Gosh, I’m not sure I’m even a ‘people person’ really, and I miss my colleagues! So, as we continually navigate the ups and downs of retail, let’s remember the unchanging significance of celebrating as a team. Beyond the transformations and challenges, it’s the shared moments of celebration that keep us connected and remind us that we’re part of something greater.

This is, in part, why I’m so looking forward to next month. The People in Retail Awards are going to bring together the power of celebration, unity, and recognition. It’s a night to honor accomplishments, connect and quite rightly just enjoy “togetherness”. Let’s embrace the positive and celebrate the journey we’ve undertaken together. Plus…. I get a chance to swap out my trainers for a pair of heels. I feel like I’m treating myself too!

In a world where everything changes, the act of celebrating together remains an unwavering constant. Let’s continue to come together, celebrate achievements, and uplift one another – for it’s in these moments that we find strength, connection, and a shared purpose.
