Matalan chief operating officer departs after three years
Matalan’s chief operating officer Phil Hackney has left the business after three years.
He joined the retailer in 2023 as chief supply chain operations officer, and became chief operating officer in 2025.
Prior to that, he was chief operating officer at The Very Group for over six years, and previously worked in senior logistics roles at Pets at Home, Tech Data and Boots.
Subscribe to TRBAnnouncing his departure on LinkedIn, he said: “It’s been an amazing experience leading the transformation of Matalan’s systems and operational areas, learning so much ( every day is a school day) working with some brilliant people, and having some fun along the way.”
He thanked to past chief executive Jo Whitfield for bringing him into the business, and also Henrik Nordvall who stepped down from the role this summer.
He added: “It also been a fabulous experience to work with such an experienced and outstanding exec team in Dave Williams, Sarah Welsh, Aly Fadil and for the second time the wonderful Katherine Davis, and an outstanding chair Karl-Heinz Holland.
“Finally to my team, it you want to look good surround yourself with amazing people and support them. It’s been a real pleasure being part of this team, so a huge thanks to Tom Palombella, Chris Salkeld, Jo Caile, Julia Hassall, Verity Warnecke, Gemma Grant, Lucy Butler and Carl Heathcote.
“Matalan is built on its people so to all the teams a huge thankyou for your support, I will look on with real interest as you continue the journey.”
Hackney said he was starting a new role shortly but did not say where he is going. Matalan has not yet announced his successor.
