Marks & Spencer adds self-checkouts to changing rooms

Marks & Spencer is planning to add self-service checkouts to changing rooms in all 180 of its clothing stores to stop customers having to queue twice.

According to The Telegraph, the retailer has already introduced self scanning technology in 28 recently refurbished locations and plans to complete a roll out to 100 stores by 2028. It will then be introduced in the remainder of shops once M&S has completed its wider store transformation programme.

Sacha Berendji, M&S operations director, told The Telegraph: “We’d like customers to be able to walk straight into the fitting room with no queue, try on what they’ve chosen, then pay there and just walk out.”

Self scanners are currently being added to just one changing room area but more could be added according to customer demand.

Berendji also told the newspaper that there will be staff hosting the changing rooms who will ensure that customers do not leave without paying.

Sites where self checkouts are already in operation include Fosse Park in Leicester, one of the retailer’s flagship stores.

Berendji added: “This is all about choice. If you want to be served by a colleague, that’s absolutely OK and you always can be. But people who want to serve themselves, they can do that instead.”
