Marks & Spencer names new chairman

Marks and Spencer has appointed former Asda chief Archie Norman as its new chairman.

Due to take up his role on 1 September, he will succeed current chairman Robert Swannell who announced late last year that he intended to retire in 2017.

Vindi Banga, the senior independent director at M&S who led the selection process, said: “Having conducted a very rigorous appointment process, it was clear to us that Archie was the best person to be chairman. Archie is one of the most respected business leaders in the UK with extensive experience as both CEO and chair, and a proven record in retail and other areas.”

Norman has served as chairman of Hobbycraft and Lazards and has also worked as chairman of ITV, chief executive of Asda, and group finance director at B&Q owner Kingfisher.

In 2016 he was appointed by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy as its lead non-executive board member.

Swannell said: “I am delighted that Archie, with his deep, relevant experience is to be M&S’s next Chairman. With the appointment of Steve Rowe in 2016, I am confident that we have an excellent team, well-equipped to grow and strengthen the business. I wish them all the very best for the future.”

carlier this week, M&S announced that it has appointed Halfords chief executive Jill McDonald to head up its clothing, home and beauty category.
