John Lewis sales up 2% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain increased by 2% year-on-year last week as trade was boosted by customers updating the summer wardrobes.

Fashion sales climbed by 12.5% with sales of summer clothing items rising by 40%. Women’s shoe sales were particularly strong, increasing by 31.5% on last year.

Although home sales were down 1.8%, sales in the outdoor living category increased by 16% as the retailer saw strong uplifts in sales of outdoor furniture and barbeques.

Electrical and home technology sales dropped by 5%. However, the small electricals category saw a 2.6% uplift driven by an increase in the sales of fans due to the warmer weather.
