John Lewis sales up 0.4% last week

John Lewis saw its sales edge up 0.4% year-on-year last week. The retailer said the small uplift was a result of the extra time created by Christmas Day falling on a Sunday this year meaning that the big Christmas shopping days will fall this week instead.

Fashion sales were up 2.6% as knitwear had a record week with sales up 35%. Menswear sales also had a healthy increase with sales rising by 6.6%.

Electricals and home technology sales were down 0.6% year-on-year. Sales of Dyson supersonic hairdryers were again the bestselling electrical item. Headphones, mobile phones and wearable tech products achieved record sales, and sales of large electrical items were also strong.

Home sales were down 1.3% despite sales in the upholstery category climbing by 18%. Gifting achieved a record week for the retailer with food gifts selling particularly well. Sales in the retailer’s Christmas Shops saw an increase of 8%.
