German grocery retailer Edeka introduces cash handling system

Scan Coin cash counter eliminates the direct handling of cash by staff

The E-Centre in Duisburg, Germany, part of the German grocery retailer Edeka, has introduced cash handling technology CashComplete® from cash handling company SCAN COIN, to offer customers a better in-store experience and reduce the time spent by staff counting cash in store.

The E-Centre has selected SCAN COIN’s CashComplete® to run alongside its existing EPOS technology. While cashiers in store scan the purchases and handle card payments in the same way as before, shoppers insert notes and coins into a self-service cash recycling terminal that is mounted on the end of the cash desk. Shoppers can easily get rid of their coins by throwing them into a funnel. Without exposing cash at any time the technology allows staff to transfer notes into a back office safe via a special transport unit.

Cash is placed by the customer directly into a SCAN COIN cash counter and therefore eliminates the direct handling of cash by staff.
Falk Tonscheidt, CEO and owner of the E-Centre, said, “The business prides itself on great customer service at the checkout and Edeka felt that a new system to handle cash would make a big difference to the customer experience. Besides a strong customer-orientated approach, the business also wanted to ensure that the technology matched its employees’ expectations.”

The systems are emptied every night and the laborious task of counting the coins and notes is removed. Tonscheidt said, “The automatic counting of the money at the end of the day saves a considerable amount of time and the systems are ready for use quickly in the morning.”
