Q&A with Rob Nay, co-Head of Legal at LegalVision
Rob Nay is co-Head of Legal at LegalVision and specialises in commercial contracts, data & privacy, IT and construction & infrastructure. Rob manages a team of high-performing lawyers, focusing on providing commercially pragmatic advice to clients of all sizes, from SMEs to multinational corporations.
Can you tell us a bit about your background?
I am a commercial lawyer by training and have spent my career advising growing businesses on the legal issues that actually affect performance, risk, and decision-making. Before joining LegalVision, I worked in traditional private practice and saw firsthand how frustrating and disconnected the billable hour model can be for business owners. At LegalVision, my role is to ensure our legal advice is practical, commercially minded and genuinely helpful for clients navigating growth.
What does your company do? What is your USP?
LegalVision provides ongoing legal support to businesses through a membership model. Our USP is simple. Businesses get unlimited access to a dedicated legal team across commercial, employment, property, IP and regulatory matters for a predictable monthly fee. We focus on being proactive partners, not reactive lawyers.
What’s special about LegalVision’s membership and your approach to legal services?
The membership removes the friction that usually comes with engaging lawyers. Clients do not have to worry about hourly rates or whether a quick question will turn into a large invoice. That changes behaviour. Businesses come to us earlier, make better decisions and avoid issues escalating. Internally, it also allows our lawyers to focus on outcomes and long-term relationships rather than time recording.
What advantage does it add for businesses?
Speed, certainty and confidence. Businesses can move faster because legal input is readily available. Costs are predictable, which helps with budgeting. Most importantly, leaders feel confident making decisions knowing they have legal support on hand.
How do you deliver legal services to retailers?
Retail clients typically work with us across multiple areas at once. This might include supplier and distribution agreements, eCommerce terms, employment advice, property and leasing support, and consumer law compliance. Through membership, retailers have a core legal team that understands their business and can support both day-to-day issues and strategic projects as they scale.
How are retailers using your membership to gain competitive advantage, and what does best practice look like? Can you share a case study?
Best practice retailers use the membership proactively rather than only when something goes wrong. For example, one fast-growing omnichannel retailer used our membership to standardise supplier contracts, tighten their online terms and overhaul employment documentation ahead of expansion. This reduced disputes, sped up onboarding of new suppliers and gave leadership confidence to scale quickly. The legal function became an enabler rather than a bottleneck.
Are there other companies you partner with?
Yes. We regularly partner with accounting firms, HR providers, insurers and technology platforms that support growing businesses. These partnerships allow us to provide more holistic support and ensure clients get joined-up advice across legal, financial and operational areas.
What challenges and opportunities do you see in UK retail for 2026?
Retailers are facing continued cost pressure, regulatory scrutiny and complex employment challenges, alongside rapid change in eCommerce, AI and consumer expectations. At the same time, there are opportunities for agile brands to adapt quickly, optimise supply chains, and build trust with customers through compliance and transparency.
How do you help clients address these challenges?
We help retailers stay compliant without slowing them down. That means clear, practical advice on employment law changes, consumer obligations, data protection and supplier risk. Through membership, we can support ongoing reviews and updates rather than one-off fixes, which is critical in a fast-changing environment.
What is on the horizon for you as a company?
We are continuing to invest heavily in our tech stack to improve speed, consistency and insight for clients. Our focus is on making legal support even more accessible, proactive and integrated into how businesses operate day to day.
Any final thoughts?
Retail is a demanding sector, and legal issues are rarely isolated. Having a legal partner who understands the commercial reality and is available when you need them makes a real difference. Our membership is designed to give retailers the confidence and support they need as they grow.
