Usdaw strike at GXO Swindon threatens B&Q supply chain

Members of Usdaw (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) employed at the GXO distribution centre in Swindon are set to commence a 48-hour industrial action beginning at 2 pm on Sunday, 24 March 2024.

This strike, involving over 100 drivers and clerical staff, is in response to unresolved pay disputes and is likely to affect B&Q store supplies in the region.

The GXO facility in question handles a critical B&Q contract, and the impending strike raises concerns about potential disruptions in the retail giant’s supply chain. Usdaw members at this distribution centre have overwhelmingly voted against GXO’s initial pay offer of 5.25%, prompting the call to action.

Rab Donnelly, Usdaw Regional Secretary, expressed the union’s position: “Our members at GXO Swindon overwhelmingly voted to reject the company’s initial offer of 5.25%. Despite further discussions, we are yet to find a resolution acceptable to our members. While industrial action is always our last resort, we must advocate for fair compensation that acknowledges the rising cost of living and the crucial role our members play at the Swindon site.”

Donnelly further emphasized the disparity in wages across the company’s various locations, underscoring the need for a pay raise that accurately reflects the current economic climate and the workers’ value to the operation.

“This 48-hour stoppage is a significant step for our members and signals the potential for supply chain disruptions at B&Q stores within the region. We strongly encourage GXO to present a fair offer, resonating with our members’ demands and mitigating the risk of further action,” added Donnelly.
