British Garden Centres makes further acquisition
British Garden Centres has acquired Alton Garden Centre in Wickford as it looks to expand its presence in the South East.
The news means that five centres have joined the group in 2026.
Subscribe to TRBOwned and led by the Stubbs family, British Garden Centres is the largest family owned garden centre group in the UK with 78 sites.
Meanwhile, Alton Garden Centre is the biggest garden centre in Essex and has been owned and operated by the Bunker family since 1971. The acquisition follows Derek Bunker’s retirement.
The centre will retain its existing name following the purchase. In addition, Andy Bunker will join the plant buying team and Jay Bunker will continue to run the BBQ department.

British Garden Centres will now be working with the Alton team to introduce new ranges and make targeted on-site improvements, including enhancements to the restaurant.

British Garden Centres has a team of over 3,500 staff members working across the garden centres, restaurants, growing nurseries, distribution centres, Woodthorpe Leisure Park, and Woody’s Restaurant & Bar.
