Bensons for Beds launches ‘Sleep Calm and Carry On’ to combat ‘Tangry’ behavior

Bensons for Beds has introduced an exclusive 6-part programme, ‘Sleep Calm and Carry On,’ aimed at helping Brits manage their sleep better and combat the signs of being ‘Tangry’ (tired and angry).

The programme, developed in collaboration with leading sleep expert Dr. Sophie Bostock, offers a collection of bite-sized tips and videos available via the Bensons website.

‘TANGRY’ (tired and angry)

Research Highlights Tangry Behavior

New research reveals that modern Brits are more likely to be ‘Tangry,’ with nine in 10 people experiencing mood swings due to lack of sleep. The survey of 2,000 Brits found that 30% frequently row with their partners and 18% feel like different people when tired. Common signs of tangry behavior include swearing under breath, bursting into tears, and overreacting to small issues.

The ‘Sleep Calm and Carry On’ programme includes six short videos designed to educate people on the importance of sleep and its impact on mental and physical health. The chapters cover topics such as:

  1. Identifying if lack of sleep is causing tangry behavior.
  2. Tracking sleep patterns with a sleep diary.
  3. Tools to help unwind before bed.
  4. Tips on getting back to sleep after waking up.
  5. Wind-down techniques before bedtime.
  6. Strategies for maintaining energy during the day.

Expert Insights from Dr. Sophie Bostock

Dr. Sophie Bostock, Innovation Lead at Big Health and NHS Innovation Accelerator Fellow, emphasises the link between sleep, wellbeing, and behavior. “A lack of sleep can alter the emotional control centers of the brain, making us more sensitive to stress and reducing self-control. This survey is a valuable reminder that sleep deprivation can lead to regrettable behavior,” says Dr. Bostock.

Bensons’ research identifies the top 25 signs of tangry behavior, including impatience, snapping at others, and being unable to concentrate. Other side effects include shouting at children, losing patience with shop workers, and aggressive driving. Interestingly, ‘tired’ is the most common feeling upon waking, with 43% of people reporting this.

Top 10 Tangriest Cities (H3)

The research also revealed the cities with the highest levels of tangry behavior:

  1. Brighton & Hove
  2. Belfast
  3. Cardiff
  4. Liverpool
  5. Oxford
  6. Sheffield
  7. Southampton
  8. Birmingham
  9. Edinburgh
  10. York

Support and Resources

Bensons aims to support the public in combating tangry behavior with this new programme. Lisa Richards, Head of Marketing at Bensons, says, “We hope our ‘Sleep Calm and Carry On’ programme will help people alleviate tangry episodes and get the best night’s sleep possible every night.”

The ‘Sleep Calm and Carry On’ programme is available now exclusively at Bensons for Beds.
