Asda launches training programme for future eye specialists

Asda’s opticians business is launching a new training programme for budding optometrists.

The scheme has been developed specifically for university graduates who have studied optometry to give them hands-on experience in Asda’s stores across the UK.

The training will enable the graduates to become GOC (General Optical Council) registered optometrists, with support from experienced professionals and structured learning on the job.

The training will include a mix of in-person training sessions, online learning modules, and hands-on testing clinics with real patients

Last year, Asda Opticians launched an apprenticeship programme giving optical assistant colleagues the opportunity to become a dispensing optician.

Kristy Jackson, optical professional development manager at Asda Opticians, said: “This programme has been many years in the making, and it reflects our commitment to supporting colleagues at every stage of their professional journey.

“We’re proud to offer a pathway that combines comprehensive clinical training with real-world experience, ensuring we can attract top talent into our stores.”

The year-long training will be delivered by Optom Academy with each  optometrist being supported by a dedicated Asda Opticians supervisor.
