Studio.co.uk appoints director of data to lead newly created data team

Online value retailer Studio.co.uk has bolstered its senior team with the appointment of  Gareth Powell as director of data.

In his new position, he has brought together Studio’s analytics, data governance, data engineering and architecture talent which has been  expanded to a team of 35 following the recruitment of 10 new members of staff. The retailer is also investing in data technologies, including Snowflake and Microsoft Azure.

Studio said Powell is implementing a big data programme as the retailer looks to improve how its capitalises on its data asset.

Powell has a wealth of data experience across retail and telecoms sectors, including at N Brown where he was director of data science, and at TalkTalk where he led a centralised insight and analytics division.

The retailer recently reached a milestone of  over two million active customers after Covid-19 lockdowns accelerated its digital transformation plans.  The Studio app now has over 1.2 million users, representing 32% of sales and s 25% increase year-on-year.

Paul Kendrick, chief executive of Studio Retail Group, said: “Gareth has a proven track record in data management, his skills are therefore pivotal to our ambitious plans to utilise data to grow and expand the business. We have already seen fantastic results from Gareth and look forward to seeing what he brings to an already strong leadership team on the challenging journey we have ahead of us.”
