Retail sales growth slows again in May

Retail sales growth is remaining low, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics.

Volume growth in May was 1.6 per cent below the rate in May 2008, with growth in the three months to May just 0.6 per cent. Along with figures from January and April this marks the lowest growth rate since December 1995.
Predominantly food-based stores saw sales volumes in May 2009 decrease by 1.4 per cent compared to May 2008, while predominantly non-food sales decreased by 3 per cent.
