M&S accelerates new store openings with development of 12 former Homebase sites

Marks & Spencer is investing in 12 new food stores on former Homebase sites in England.

Marking a major step in the retailer’s store rotation and renewal programme, the move will create over 550 new jobs.

The new sites will include ten food shops and two full line stores in places like Abingdon, Cannock, Farnham, Godalming and Northampton.

While two of the food stores will open by the end of this year, a total eight stores are set to be up and running by July 2026.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

All store plans are subject to planning permission.

The retailer’s store rotation and renewal programme aims to deliver 420 larger, more modern food stores and transform 180 full-line stores into more productive group formats. By 2027/28, half of the store estate is expected to be upgraded to the new renewal format.

Last year M&S opened six food stores and two full line stores, and also renewed nine existing stores.

M&S chief executive Stuart Machin said: “Investing in new and renewed stores is one of our key transformation priorities. Securing these highly desirable sites in priority locations will accelerate this strategy, drive further growth in our M&S food business and most importantly give our customers the best possible M&S shopping experience.”
