Halfords rolls out body-worn cameras to protect frontline colleagues
In a bold move to enhance colleague safety and reduce incidents of abuse in stores, Halfords has partnered with leading body-worn camera provider Reveal to implement the technology across its UK retail estate.
The initiative follows a marked rise in instances of violence, intimidation, and verbal abuse directed at store staff, a trend seen across much of the retail sector. Recognising the urgent need to better protect its workforce, Halfords launched a trial in 2023. The results were immediate and compelling.
“We place the health, safety and wellbeing of our colleagues above all else,” said Halfords CEO Henry Birch. “The introduction of body-worn cameras has been a critical step in strengthening our efforts to reduce risk on the shop floor.”
The initial pilot involved just three cameras across 35 stores, but the feedback from colleagues was overwhelmingly positive. Over 90% of participating staff reported feeling safer at work, with 85% citing a clear de-escalation in confrontational situations when the cameras were in use.
According to store teams, the cameras — featuring a front-facing screen — helped defuse tensions quickly. “Whenever the camera is switched on, it’s like flipping a switch with the customer,” said Carl Taylor, Divisional Director at Halfords. “It completely reduces the level of aggression.”
The visible presence of the devices has led to a noticeable change in customer behaviour, contributing to a more respectful in-store environment. Beyond their deterrent effect, the cameras provide secure, high-quality video and audio footage that can support police investigations where required.
For many colleagues, however, the value of the rollout goes beyond safety. It sends a clear message that the business is serious about protecting its people. “I feel like Halfords genuinely care about me as a colleague,” said Oliver, a store specialist. “Introducing these cameras was a really good investment.”
Ali Lodge, Profit Protection Partner at Halfords, praised Reveal’s role in the rollout. “Reveal made it a seamless project. Their support with training and implementation was fantastic,” she said.
Reveal, now working with over 70 retailers globally, continues to see strong demand for its body-worn camera solutions. The technology is increasingly being adopted by retailers not only as a deterrent against crime, but as a tool to foster safer and more supportive working environments.
As the retail sector grapples with rising in-store incidents, Halfords’ proactive approach demonstrates how investment in frontline protection can deliver tangible results—for colleagues, customers, and the wider business.
