Asda Opticians announces store investment and strengthens leadership team

Asda Opticians is to invest £2.5 million in the continued development of its optical estate, clinical services, and staff training and progression opportunities.

The business has also made two senior appointments to strengthen its leadership team.

Key elements of the investment include the refitting 18 optical units, upgrades to diagnostic equipment, and a new suite of technical, leadership and personal development training. It will also continue to develop the Level 6 Dispensing Optician apprenticeship, with a third cohort due to begin in September 2026.

Asda Opticians has also announced that Joe Huntford has been appointed as head of optical following three years within Asda’s field operations team. Prior to this, he held various retail roles at One Stop Stores and Sainsbury’s.

Huntford said: “Asda Opticians has a clear strategy to continue growing, and through our continued investment in our facilities and colleague development, our focus remains on delivering accessible, high quality, great value eye care for every patient who walks through our doors.”

Meanwhile, Peena Govind has been appointed as superintendent optometrist after 18 months as deputy superintendent and nearly 20 years in the industry. In her new position, she will lead professional standards and clinical excellence across the store estate.
