Tesco launches Jack’s discount chain

Tesco has launched a new discount chain called Jack’s as it looks to compete with the likes of Aldi and Lidl.

The launch of the first two stores in Chatteris in Cambridgeshire and Immingham in Lincolnshire coincides with Tesco’s centenary year. The new chain has been named after Tesco’s founder Jack Cohen.

The retailer said eight out of 10 food and drink products sold at Jack’s will be grown, reared or made in the UK. The stores will offer some familiar grocery brands as well as a new own-brand range called Jack’s. They will also sell a range of general merchandise items on a “When it’s Gone, It’s Gone” basis.

The shops will operate a low-cost business model with no “fancy” fixtures or fittings.

Dave Lewis (pictured), Tesco group chief executive, said: “Jack Cohen championed value for customers and changed the face of British shopping. He’s an inspiration for all of us and that same spirit still drives Tesco now.

“It’s fitting that today, we mark the beginning of Tesco’s celebration of 100 Years of Great Value by launching a new brand, and stores bearing his name: Jack’s. Great tasting food at the lowest possible prices with eight out of 10 products grown, reared or made in Britain.”

Tesco will be launching 10 to 15 Jack’s stores in the UK during the next six months. The stores will include a mix of entirely new sites, sites adjacent to existing Tesco stores, and a small number of converted Tesco stores
